Obituary for John W. Trapp

John W. Trapp (“Trapper John”), 78, of Jonesport, passed away in the arms of his loving wife Sharon on September 9, 2019. John was born on February 6, 1941, in Milwaukee, WI to the late John and Katherine Trapp.

John moved to Downeast Maine after a tour with the US Air Force. He retired from the US Coast Guard Reserves after serving 30 years in Jonesport. Over the years, he made his living as a carpenter and contractor to many people in the community. He was an avid fisherman and duck hunter who was always up for a good game of cribbage. He was very involved with the local chapters of Waterfowl USA and Ducks Unlimited. He enjoyed teaching hunter safety courses at Pleasant River Fish and Game Club and throughout the community. He also enjoyed carving and painting decoys with Bob and Charlene Nelson. He was very passionate about his time spent as a longtime member of the Maine Blade Runners. If you ever wanted to talk about hunting or fishing you better have plenty of time to spare. He made fast friends with all who knew him and loved to talk with strangers as well. He was an animal lover and would tell anyone who would listen about his spoiled cats or his dog Chase.

Though he held his many friendships near and dear to his heart, his true joy was with his family. He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Sharon, his children Mary, Susie, Zandra and her partner Jeff, Tiffany, son-in-law Rick, special niece Kris, grandchildren Shaela, Justin, Elandra, Brooke, Evvy, Daniel, Colton, Gabe, Aedan, Anna, Jacob, great grandchildren Elias and Exie, sister-in-law Linda Beal, brother-in-law Jerry Tibbetts and his wife Nancy, and close friends Buz Grant, Tom Carter and Jason Lord. He had many relatives who he always looked forward to seeing and friends that he liked to visit around town.

He was predeceased by his daughter Carrie, his parents, his brother Conrad Trapp, sister Kathy Traiber, mother and father-in-law Evelyn and Gerald Tibbetts, and brother-in-law Barney Beal.

Family and friends are invited to stop in for a celebration of his life on Sunday, September 15, 2019 from 2-4 PM at Jonesport Elementary School. A private burial will take place at a later date. Donations in his memory may be made to the Wesley Keeton Memorial Fund, 51 Cutler Road, East Machias, Maine, 04630, or the Ark Animal Shelter, 60 Barber Lane, Cherryfield, Maine, 04622.
